Mal Maïz + Ray Vega are here to celebrate and share their passion for Latin, Cumbia, and Jazz music with all of us. This will be a dance party!
South Burlington resident and native of the South Bronx, Ray Vega is a veteran of the bands of Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and Mario Bauza to name a few, and has performed and/or recorded with Nicholas Payton, Joe Henderson, Lionel Hampton, Mel Torme, Paquito D’Rivera, and many, many others. He has established himself as one of the innovators of the international Jazz and Latin music scenes. A multi-talented trumpeter, percussionist, composer, arranger, and educator, he presents Jazz from a refreshingly original and contemporary perspective.
Mal Maïz is a world class band that mix Latino rhythms with modern jazz, funk, and Caribbean flair. The band is led by multi-instrumentalist Maïz Vargas who shares his culture and heritage through music and movement. The Maïz Vargas Caribbean Combo is a project that works with rhythms from the Caribbean islands and Central America, working with sounds like Soca, Reggae, and Calypso and featuring master Emily Laxner on the steel pans, TWA from Trinidad and Tobago, Vargas on percussion, and Puerto Rico native Jon Thompson on bass.
